Horopito is in the middle of the Ruapehu Region. It is located on the southern edge of the Tongariro National Park with the Whanganui National Park to the west. There are great views of Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu which is an active stratovolcano and the highest mountain on the North Island.
From here you can walk or bike the Ohakune Old Coach Road, take a trip to the iconic Bridge to Nowhere or explore the lush forests of the Tongariro National Park and the stunning alpine walks up the Ohakune Mountain Road on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu. There is also the scenic chairlift up Ruapehu to Knoll Ridge Chalet, New Zealand’s highest café which sits at 2,020 metres.
